Antimicrobial Stewardship

Showcasing practical examples where teams are improving responsible antimicrobial prescribing using recognised quality improvement methods.

We’re incredibly proud! Enacting change, even when there’s robust evidence, can prove disconcerting. This award is proof of what can be achieved whenever a member of the team engages; encouraging and challenging each other in a positive way.”

About the Antimicrobial Stewardship Award

The RCVS Knowledge Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) Award shines a spotlight on teams using clinical audit and quality improvement (QI) tools to make real, measurable progress in responsible antibiotic use in veterinary care.

This award celebrates those leading the way in continuous improvement, using structured and evidence-based approaches.

To apply, show how you’ve used clinical audit to make a difference—especially in line with the domains of quality veterinary healthcare.

Tip

Not finished a full audit cycle yet? No problem. Promising projects can still be recognised with a ‘Highly Commended One to Watch’ award. Just make sure your work is rooted in solid QI methods.

Who can apply

This award is open to any veterinary organisation that is using clinical audit to improve their antimicrobial stewardship.

Applications can be submitted by any team member representing their practice or organisation. This includes veterinary surgeons, veterinary nurses, practice managers, administrative staff, and other support roles, regardless of seniority or job title.

Projects involving any species are welcome, including farm, equine, companion animal, exotics, zoo, and wildlife.

How to apply

All applicants should read the RCVS Knowledge Awards terms and conditions before applying.

The application process for the Antimicrobial Stewardship Award is made up of two sections.

  1. Online application form collecting key information.
  2. RCVS Knowledge Awards case example template detailing your audit, attached to the online form.

Closing dates

Applications must be received by 9th January 2026.

Winners will be notified in the second quarter of 2026.

What we’re looking for

Your application will be evaluated based on several key criteria:

Tip

These awards focus on using clinical audit to monitor and improve the quality of care through data collection and analysis. They are not intended for conducting Clinical Veterinary Research.

Find out more about the difference between clinical audit and research in our resource below.

Supporting evidence

You can enhance your application with supporting evidence such as team presentations and updates.

Please note, any supporting evidence may be published in its entirety along with your case example. Ensure you have permission from your practice leadership and management teams to provide such evidence.

To maintain a fair and unbiased review process, all additional documents must be anonymised. If your application or supporting documents contain prominent branding (including logos, colours, and job titles that are specific to your organisation) or details that have been previously published, we may not be able to anonymise them effectively. In such cases, these documents will not be included in the materials reviewed by the judging panel, which may affect your overall score.

Tip

Keep personal and identifiable details to a minimum. Make sure all critical information is clearly presented within the main body of your application to maximise your chances of success!

Checklist

Before submitting your application, ensure you have:

  • Completed the online application form with key information about your project and practice details.
  • Completed an awards case example template and attached it to the online application form.
  • Ensured all critical information is clearly presented within the main body of your application.
  • Confirmed you have read and accepted the terms and conditions in Section 5 of the online application form.
  • Emailed your additional supporting evidence to awards@rcvsknowledge.org and informed us.

Winning this RCVS Knowledge award really vindicates all the hard work our team has put in! We hope that seeing what a small and dedicated team can achieve helps to inspire others to further antimicrobial stewardship in small animal practice. RCVS Knowledge’s QI training underpinned our use of the clinical audit cycle, and their antimicrobial audit was a great starting point to help us review our use of antimicrobials in general and HP-CIAs in particular.”
